Roman Bystrianyk, "Study links vaccines containing mercury with autism", Health Sentinel, March 10, 2006,
A 1948 article in the journal Pediatrics opens with, “Inflammatory reactions involving various parts of the nervous system following injections or various sera or vaccines have long been known”. In that paper they discuss 15 instances in children at Boston Children’s Hospital that developed “acute cerebral symptoms within a period of hours after administration of pertussis vaccine.”
During the same time, the 1940s to the 1950s widespread use of the DTP vaccine (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis – more commonly know as whooping cough) came into use. Analysis of the historical data available shows that the recorded rate of whooping cough slowly fell coinciding with the use of the vaccine. However, using additional historical references from England – which maintained the most accurate historical disease mortality records – shows that before widespread vaccination the death rate from whooping cough had already declined by approximately 98.8 percent from its peak recorded in the 1860s.
A 1996 article in Pediatrics noted that a large controlled study, the NCES or National Childhood Encephalopathy Study, found that, “a significant association exists between the occurrence of acute neurologic illness and DTP vaccination with the preceding 7 days.” In 1994, an IOM (Institute of Medicine) committee concluded that the, “balance of evidence is consistent with a causal relation between DTP and chronic nervous system dysfunction in children whose serious acute neurological illness occurred within 7 days of DTP vaccination.”
However, a 1991 American Academy of Pediatrics report indicated that severe problems were rare. Although half the children were reported to be “fretful” or have fevers, severe neurological problems were reported to be 1 in 140,000 to 1 in 300,000. Seizures were reported to be 1 in 7,500, persistent screaming as 1 in 100, and unusual, high-pitched cry as 1 in 1,000.
Thimerosal is a mercury-containing compound that has been used since the 1930s as a preservative in many vaccines. According to the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) website, “Over the past several years, because of an increasing awareness of the theoretical potential for neurotoxicity of even low levels of organomercurials and because of the increased number of thimerosal containing vaccines that had been added to the infant immunization schedule, concerns about the use of thimerosal in vaccines and other products have been raised. Indeed, because of these concerns, the Food and Drug Administration has worked with, and continues to work with, vaccine manufacturers to reduce or eliminate thimerosal from vaccines.”
Autism is a disorder of the brain that impairs communication and social skills. It encompasses a broad range of disorders that may range from mild to severe. Autism, once uncommon, is now more widespread than childhood cancer, diabetes, and Down syndrome. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), 1 in 166 children currently have an autistic disorder, and 1 in 6 children have a developmental and/or behavioral disorder.
A study published in the spring edition of Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons, examines the connection between vaccines that contain thimerosal and autism. The authors of the study are David A. Geier, B.A. and Mark R. Geier, M.D., Ph.D. According to the authors the study was thoroughly reviewed prior to publication. “Our manuscript underwent blinded peer-review by three different peer-reviewers including a bio-statistician/epidemiologist prior to its publication.”
A great deal of debate and controversy has surrounded this one ingredient in particular, thimerosal, as being in part responsible for the huge increase in cases of autism. While many parents of autistic children and activists believe that there is a link between vaccines containing mercury, government and other officials have rejected these claims. In 2004, the IOM (Institute of Medicine) stated that, “the committee concludes that the evidence favors rejection of a causal relationship between thimerosal-containing vaccines and autism.”
But according to the Milford Daily News a confidential CDC (Centers for Disease Control) study in 2000 actually found that children were 2.5 times more likely to develop autism when they receive 62.5 micrograms of mercury from vaccines at 3 months of age. The study was uncovered by an advocacy group under the Freedom of Information Act. “They're on record saying there's no effect from thimerosal, it's completely safe, even though their own internal studies show it's harmful,” said researcher David Geier.
According to Geier’s study, “exposure to mercury has previously been shown to cause immune, sensory, neurological, motor, and behavioral dysfunctions similar to traits defining or associated with autistic disorders, and with similarities in neuroanatomy, neurotransmitters, and biochemistry.” Also that, “recent research that codes children’s behaviors, and toy play from videotapes of the toddlers’ first and second birthday parties demonstrate that the regression associated with autistic disorders clearly manifests between the ages of 12 and 24 months, concurrent with the exposure to thimerosal-containing childhood vaccines (TCVs).”
Citing other research the authors note that several studies have examined the effect of thimerosal. One study examined infant monkeys following injection of doses of mercury comparable to the amount that U.S. children received during the 1990s. These researchers established that, “thimerosal crosses the blood-brain barrier and results in appreciable mercury content in tissues including the brain.” Another study examined mice after similarly being exposed to thimerosal and found that, “autistic symptoms in a susceptible mouse strain that included growth delay, reduced locomotion, exaggerated response to novelty, increased brain size, and significant abnormalities in brain architecture affecting areas subserving emotion and cognition.”
In the late 1980s into the 1990s the CDC expanded the number of TCVs to be given to children. Because of this increase a child could have received as much as 200 micrograms (µg) of mercury during the first six months of life. During the same time epidemic levels of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDs) including autism were observed that, “cannot be explained by immigration, changed diagnostic criteria, or improved identification.”
The authors hypothesized that since thimerosal has been removed from many vaccines that this decrease in thimerosal exposure should be accompanied with a decrease in autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders. “Assuming a 3- to 4- year lag time between birth and diagnosis of an ND, the peak followed by a decline in NDs would be expected to occur around 2002 if thimerosal had a significant impact on NDs.”
Using the VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System) and CDDS (California Department of Developmental Services) databases, the independent researchers analyzed reports of childhood NDs, including autism, before and after removal of mercury-based preservatives.
From the data the authors determine that, “overall, it appears that the increasing and subsequent decreasing trends in the rates of NDs, observed in both the VAERS and CDDS databases, correlate with temporal periods when the cumulative amount of mercury in the childhood immunization schedule expanded and later contracted.” Continuing the authors note that, “the consistency of the effects observed for the spectrum of NDs, including autism and speech disorders, and the agreement between the observations from two separate databases, support the conclusion that the effect is real and not a chance observation.”
Critics charge that the VAERS database cannot be used to draw any conclusions about autism because anyone – including doctors, patients, or lawyers – can submit reports to it. According to Milford Daily News, Glen Nowak, spokesman for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated that the VAERS data “in and of itself is not a strong signal.”
Responding to that criticism, the authors state that the VAERS is an epidemiological database that was established by an act of the United States Congress and set-up by the CDC to track adverse events reported following vaccination and is jointly maintained by the CDC and FDA. The VAERS has a total of approximately 200,000 adverse event reports that have been reported following more than 1 billion doses of vaccines administered in the United States. This probably makes the VAERS the largest database of adverse vaccine reactions in the world.
Adverse vaccine reactions are by law required to be reported to VAERS with a VAERS group that specifically analyzes and has published numerous peer-reviewed epidemiologic studies based upon examination of the VAERS database. The CDC has made official vaccine policy recommendations based upon epidemiological assessments of the VAERS. For example, the withdrawal of the rotavirus vaccine back in 1999 following numerous reports of intussussception following rotavirus vaccine to the VAERS database.
“It appears that the US CDC can analyze and publish epidemiological assessments of the VAERS database, but when independent researchers such as us, publish conclusions based upon epidemiological assessments of the VAERS database, that the CDC does not agree with, than according to the US CDC the VAERS becomes an unacceptable database to draw epidemiological conclusions from.”
“In quickly examining those who claim to dispute our results and others that have reported an association between Thimerosal and autism, they claim to not understand why autism increased in the US during the 1990s (as Thimerosal was increased in US vaccines), they claim to not understand why autism decreased in the US during the early 2000s (as Thimerosal was decreased in US vaccines), they claim to not understand why when comparing children that received additional doses of mercury from Thimerosal-containing DTaP vaccine in comparison to Thimerosal-free DTaP vaccine those children that received Thimerosal-containing DTaP vaccines were at increased risk of developing autism, and they claim to not understand numerous recent clinical, biochemical, genetic, molecular, etc. studies that support the ability of Thimerosal from vaccines administered in the US to occasion autism.”
“Based upon the fact that all the previous observations have one simple and transparent explanation, namely that Thimerosal was causing autism in the US, and those who purported dispute the link have no cohesive explanation for the phenomena observed, one must seriously considered that Thimerosal was a cause of autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders in the US.”
The authors conclude their paper with, “From the data presented here and other emerging data, it appears clear that additional research should be undertaken concerning the effects of mercury exposure, particularly from TCVs.”
According to wikipedia.org, “Mark R. Geier, MD, PhD, is a medical doctor based in Silver Spring, Maryland, who also holds a doctorate in genetics and is board-certified in medical genetics and forensic medicine. He was a researcher at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for ten years, and previously was a professor at Johns Hopkins University. He has studied vaccines for more than 30 years and has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers on vaccine safety, efficacy, contamination and policy. He has authored over 90 publications and has made several presentations to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) on the adverse effects of vaccinations. He and his son, David Geier, are the only independent researchers ever to have been permitted to study the Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD) database of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).”
US health agencies have uniformly rejected the conclusions of the Geiers' studies, and one of the Geiers' articles was the subject of heavy criticism by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Geier says public health officials are “just trying to cover it up.” On the other hand, “Mercury in Medicine Taking Unnecessary Risks”, a report prepared by the staff of the Subcommittee on Human Rights and Wellness, House Committee on Government Reform, Chaired by Dan Burton, was published in the Congressional Record in May, 2003, stated:
“However, the Committee upon a thorough review of the scientific literature and internal documents from government and industry did find evidence that thimerosal did pose a risk. Thimerosal used as a preservative in vaccines is likely related to the autism epidemic. This epidemic in all probability may have been prevented or curtailed had the FDA not been asleep at the switch regarding the lack of safety data regarding injected thimerosal and the sharp rise of infant exposure to this known neurotoxin. Our public health agencies’ failure to act is indicative of institutional malfeasance for self-protection and misplaced protectionism of the pharmaceutical industry.”

I have read the remarks here from people wondering about compensation for thimerosal and/or vaccine related injuries. I wish I could make hopeful remarks. Having witnessed first hand our US Dept. of Justice's brand of justice as it comes to compensating the vaccine injured I cannot offer any positive remarks. The National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986 which created the Vaccine Injury Compensation Fund does not fairly protect those injured by vaccines. After battling the program for years I have come to realize the program only protects the drugs companies, those who administer vaccines, and especially the National Immunization Program itself. Our day in court before a Special Master and DOJ lawyer reminded me of how rape victims are treated. The opinion from the Special Master reads as if the DOJ wrote it for the Special Master. The opinion included wrong dates and mistakes along with omission of truths. If you decide to go after compensation be very brave and strong. The program is very adversarial and unfair. The saddest thing here is, these are babies and children who were normal and have now been sentenced to a life of struggling and our government does not care. I often wonder how can all the people involved in rejecting compensation for vaccine injured children live with themselves. To help me cope with the injustice of it all I keep the Special Master and DOJ in my prayers and pray that they never have a child injued by vaccines. No one desires what our family has gone through, no one. |

Well, I wasn't going to comment, because, it's all been said before, hasn't it? I have a 6 year old boy with autism, and a 13 year old boy with an emotional disorder. Let me say that for my 13 year old its (not that bad) as some have said. My six year old bites himself, he wears a diaper, he beats his head, he cannot feed himself. But he understands! What do you think? I am one of the beleivers, I think that my children have been poisoned! I'm sorry that my opinion is offensive to some. No amount of money, no appologies from these Companys, nothing, is going to give my son his life back. Find a cure! |

I am a mother of a 5 year old son with autism. I am greatful he is able to verbally communicate with me and his peers. However, the mere act of verbal communication is very difficult and frustrating for him. I am also greatful for the support his school is providing him. He has an entire educational team working for him. I know not all in his situation are so lucky. It hurts to think he needs such assistance. I have a video tape of my brother's wedding when he was approximately 1 yr old. He was singing the ABC song in the background. Not long after he refused to sing any song at all and last year he was diagnosed with autism. I have tried not to focus on the cause and tried not to blame myself, but rather focus on him and his needs while at the sametime not neglecting my other two sons. I am an educated person completing a Masters in Biology. I know the damaging effects and results of the diseases my son was vacinated for. However, I also know that mercury is not what our children need nor should they have ever been exposed to it. As parents we sometimes place trust in others when it comes to what is best for our children. This is one time when our trust in others was broken. Now we must speek out for those who cannot. Now we must prevent future generations from this painful, debilitating, and preventable condition. |

I am the mother of a severely autistic daughter, who is 13, non-verbal, and has disruptive and aggressive behavior. I have always believed it is not the vaccines that are to blame. I think we will not know that answer for several years, to see if there will be a significant decrease in autism, since thimerosal has been taken out of the vaccines for just a short while. My opinion is that it could be genetic and/or environmental. I believe it is wrong not to vaccinate and if you choose to do that, you are putting society at risk. |

Even IF there were no link between Thimerosol and autism, and even IF the pharmaceutical companies were not negligent in their preparation of Thimerosol-containing vaccines, they do deserve to be sued to bankruptcy. Why? Because when the Thimerosol controversy first arose, the company in Oregon that produces the vaccines immediately induced its U.S. Congressman to get a bill passed to protect it from lawsuits. This guy got a Federal law enacted that limits dollar damages to the company, and also requires that one register with some Federal list of plaintiffs before bringing suit. In other words, the pharmaceutical company pre-emptively covered its butt by buying out a politician and playing the government against children who may have been harmed by the vaccine. Obviously, they have no shame or remorse all. |

I am sick to death of the controvery... The pharmeceutical companies are the real culprits here. Lets face it, they are the ones who instead of seperating these injections such as DPT's, and MMR's, they decided in their infinate wisdom to put them together, and use mercury...IN OUR CHILDREN. Do you honestly believe that a mother or father..if they had known..would have allowed the dr.s and nurses to give our children this poison? NO!!! So they hid behind their Big Pharmeceutical companies, and lied to us for years. It makes me sick. These companies need to be held liable for what they did to our children!!!! They are not the ones who have children who are autistic, we are. We are the ones who live with it everyday, and watch our children struggle for anything we could call average or normal. I am the mother of a severly autistic son who is 17 years old. He was one of the guinea pigs for this idiotic government, who allowed this atrosity to happen!! |

I have an autistic 5 year old son. I'm still torn as to whether I really believe thimerosol is a contributing factor to causing autism. Half the time I want to kill the pharmaceutical companies for being greedy and using a cheap, dangerous, toxic, preservative. And the other half the time, I'm just grateful vaccines exist to prevent the diseases that wiped out many people before our time. But, that being said, why would you put poison in a vaccine intended for a child or baby AT ALL? These vaccines are suppose to keep our children healthy. Vaccines are not supposed to be a means to inject POISON directly into our children's veins. And it is POISON! If there is an over abundance of mercury in your body they don't call it mercury toxicity, they call it mercury POISONING! Don't call it toxic, that makes it seem like it really isn't a big deal. It is a big deal. Mercury is a POISON! It is not intended to be taken into a body. Vaccinate your kids, but only with vaccines that DO NOT contain any mercury derivatives. And to those who say Autism isn't so bad, compared to terminal cancer, no it isn't so bad. But compared to a normal, socially adjusted life, it IS bad. It makes it difficult to do anything new, it makes it difficult to pay attention, it makes it difficult to behave in public, it makes it difficult to communicate. And that's only mild to middle of the road diagnosis. Non-verbal autistics and their care givers have an even more difficult road. If it's "not so bad" for you, great. I'm very happy you have the capacity to actually say it is not so bad. But, please, let those of us who think it IS bad have our feelings, too. |

I would like to see all these doctors that are injecting our healthy infants with the multitude of vaccines that are required and mandatory in most states to test these vaccines on themselves and their babies and children. I can almost bet that most doctors won't even vaccinate their own children knowing all the dangerous toxins that are present including thimerisol which is not completely elimanted, still in use in the flu vaccine. It is unfortunate that parents are told over and over again to vaccinate or something terrible can happen to your baby like perhaps they might be exposed to the mumps or measles. Why bother to have an immune system, not needed when we take a shot for this and a pill for that. Society is ingrained with the belief that all diseases were wiped out with the introduction of these life saving vaccines. Some were perhaps in the 1800's, but we are no longer living in squalor, we have clean drinking water, sewer systems, and sanitation. That is what wiped out the majority of diseases in the late 1800's into the 1900's NOT VACCINES!!! So please parents before you subject your precious baby to a vaccine that you know nothing about do some research. Don't blindly put your trust in your pediatrician when it comes to your child. My heart goes out to all the parents who brought a healthy baby into this world, vaccinate them, and find out down the road that their child has a brain disorder, has add, has a disability. These doctors can walk away and not lose sleep at night while all the parents that have autistic children wonder could this have been prevented had I done a little research and questioned the so called experts on what the adverse effects could be and what exactly they are injecting into our babies. I am one parent that choose not to vaccinate, I opted for a religious exemption, that worked for me and was accepted by the health department and the public schools my children attened. My kids rarely get sick, never had an ear infection, or allergy, or an attention deficit disorder. They are not unhealthy teenagers. I urge all parents to question your doctors, stand up to them, and if need be, educate them! |

Although they do not go to doctors they do attend public schools so if they had ND's educators would have discovered the ND's and informed the parents. It might be worth someone looking at the Christian Scientist population. Grant you this would be a difficult undertaking since Christian Scientist live all over the world. Long before that we knew Hunter had issues. My husband quit his job and stayed home for 1 and 1/2 years so that Hunter could have consistency, we also put him on the GF-CF diet. He is medically exempt from receiving anymore vaccinations, and I will not give him the mmr, nor my 2 year old son, Spencer, whom I have spaced out his shots significantly. "My daughter missed the cut off date of having toxins in our vaccines. She was born in 1999- December." This is totally false. Vaccines with mercury continued long after 1999. They were never banned until recently in California. They all should've been recalled after the 1999 petition but this would have cost the big Pharms a lot of money. It is much cheaper to deny deny deny. What was done is criminal! |

Autism is a spectrum (meaning there is no good diagnosis). Several high functioning autistics have commented how it isn't so bad. Obviously they can write and probably speak as well, I suggest you have no clue about the other end of the spectrum. The non-verbals, like my son, that have to struggle every day. People are so easily swayed by statistics created by those that could be held at fault or have some monetary interest. This is now referred to as "cigarette science". It is fairly obvious that a whole generation of children were (are still?) subject to "something" that caused brain disorders in a significant percent of the population, with autism being one of them. The medical community is in denial. The children and the parents of these children have to live with the consequences of this for the rest of their lives. |

Not every person is going to become autistic because of vaccines. However, it does not rule out the fact that mercury is one of the most horrble toxins on this planet. If you inject mercury into children, it is only fair to say that something can and will go wrong. Maybe not with every child. Not every child will get autism from this. But what about ADHD, OCD, learning disorders, speech disorders? It is an epidemic explosion! Some children react differently to having posion forced into them at needle point. If a child is born with some genetics that could cause a little bit of oddities in his or her life, you can bet injecting mercury into their tiny, already weak immune system will certainly shove thoseoddities into something much worse, like autism. I am a firm believer that a toxin is a toxin. What on earth would be worse to inject into a child than a toxin? My daughter missed the cut off date of having toxins in our vaccines. She was born in 1999- December. I will always remember Doing what I was told to do about the shots and holding her down while they did it. Vaccines are a must. Toxic Vaccines are stupid. |

I too have battled the vaccine controversy over and over for the last 7 years or so, my son is 10. I still have the pediatricians ask me "is there anything I can say or do that will change your mind about giving your other child the MMR"? No, not unless you can absolutely tell me and write a written statement absolving yourself that nothing will happen to them, that they will not get autism also. They continue to tell the parents of autistic children that there are absolutely no harmful effects from the vaccines, all the mercury has been taken out except from the flushots, and we should stick to trying to help our children in other ways than to be scientists. How pompous and callous is that??? And of course, they do not have a child with autism or a broken heart to speak of. I do believe the vaccines are a trigger, a vital component to causing autism along with environmental factors, other toxins, mostly antibiotics and cortisone drugs, also some allergies that were unknown, milk one of them for several years. Let's all stop pretending that there is no link at all... All and every avenue should be explored and researched as to why our beautiful and wonderful children have this puzzling disorder which has made our lives so tragic, yet deeply touched by them on a daily basis. |

I am of the opinion that there are multiple causes for NDs (which include autism, ADHD, etc...) and would not discount that toxins, such as mercury contribute to certain subtypes of these conditions. However, based on this research alone, I question the so-called "decrease" in autism since thimerosal has been removed from vaccines. Recent reports that I have read indicate a marked increase in these conditions over the last 5 years, even when counting only the most severe forms of autism (not those that may be attributed to "better diagnosis"). I sincerly hope that research is stepped up to uncover the truth of these mysteries. As a parent of a seriously autistic 14-year-old, I need to respond to the individual who basically said, "so what? I'm autistic . . ." this is a condition, like any medical condition, that can range from mild to severe. Severe autism is extremely debilitating. It is an alarming problem to see an increase in any serious medical condition. Count yourself lucky to be on the mild end of the spectrum. |

I am a father of a 14 year old girl who shows sighns of an autism related mental defect. However, I am not exactly sure of this and I do not know how I would go about having her tested. She was tested when she was in the fourth grade, prior to her entance to an elementary school, after her mother and her moved from Ohio to Pennsylvania. The schools psychologist listed "Austistic tendecies" on the report for placement in the schools's special ed program. No further tests were conducted. I know I should have had my daughter further tested but, since I do not have custodial custody of her (her mother and I are divorced) I did not push the issue for further testing. It has been over four years now since she entered her current school district and the leaps and bounds progress she has shown are truly amazing. Reading some of the responses here gives me hope that my daughter will one day lead a "normal" life. But, I am still concerned about her mental condition. First, I need to know if is truly autism my daughter has or is it just a quick-fix answer to a question her mother and I have been asking since she was about two years old when we first noticed something was definiteley wrong with her. Since she was an only child at the time, and I was in the Army stationed in Germany, the resourses were very limited. Upon our return to the States, no further tests were conducted until she entered her new school system in Pennsylvania and the school psychologist listed "autistic tendecies". No further tests still were conducted by her mother and I did not insist on any. So, I am accepting the responsibilty for not having her tested. But, that still does not resolve my problem. I need to know how I would go about having her tested and what type of doctor does the testing. Study the Amish population and their lack of autism. Create a database of those who voluntarily do not vaccinate and follow their health history. |

Oh please! All this talk about autism like it's some terrible, terrible disease makes me want to go bang my head against the wall. I'm autistic and two of my four children are autistic too, and I wouldn't be surprised if one of my grandchildren is autistic. Wow, wonder how that happened since I was not vaccinated as a child. All of those crazy loony relatives you've got in your families, they're autistic too, but you don't know it. You think they just had trouble in school because they weren't smart, or they were stubborn. That uncle who putters around with his train collection and doesn't say much, the aunt with the nervous twitches who can't drive, the cousins who just didn't socialize with anyone. Being autistic means being misunderstood by you well meaning folks who think it's the vaccines. I'm here to tell you it's not the vaccines. Autism has been around forever but it was called other names. Crazy. Psycho. Nutcase. And sometimes it has been confused with brilliance so weird nobody understands it. Except autistics themselves. The rest of you are in denial. I know you're going to tell me that your family is all normal and there is no autism. That's because you just can't see it. You won't see it because you are looking for some outside force like vaccines. You are probably the same people who believe in aliens. |

On March 10 someone posted that they would like to see the Geiers do a study using standard clinical testing procedures such as placebos, double blind protocol, etc. and not the VAERS database. I have two questions related to this remarkably short-sighted post. 1) if the CDC database is worthless for scientific purposes, then why does the CDC maintain it? no database is perfect and if someone criticizes a database its usually because they do not agree with the results 2) how would you propose testing the effects of Thimerasol in a double blind study? I hope you see the obvious paradox in your statement |

My 17 year old daughter, formally diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome at age 6 is doing wonderfully. I attribute this to intensive supportive therapies once diagnosed. Infuriating to think vaccinations may have contributed to her ultimate Autism spectrum disorder. However, with that said, I do agree there is no doubt a possible familial, genetic predisposition as my brother has 3 out of 6 children with the same disorders. I think, like so many others have experienced, it seems more likely the genetic link may be more likey. One can only hope that strides are made toward identifing potential risks such as mercury containing vaccinations. Certainly, liability and potential lawsuits will drive the proverbial pharmaceutical heads into the sand.... |

I do believe this is how my son developed Autism Spectrum Disorder. I am so glad that they finally removed the mercury from the shots. I always warn others of the potential danger of childhood shots. My son was developing typically until he recieved his shots at 15 months old. (MMR) Thank you to all that are looking for the answers! My son and I thank you very much! Nadine |

It's plain and simple: injecting poison into a baby is criminal. The excuse that thimerisol is a cheap preservative to use for vaccines and saves money is no excuse. Moreover, injecting any vaccines into a baby when it's immune system is immature is crazy. But, follow the money: vaccines are big business. Parents are trying to save their children's lives; big pharma are trying to make big bucks, lives or no lives. |

I think it is really an interesting article, but like a criminal investigator, we always want to be skeptical and look at all the potential causes, PCBS, flame retardant materials, cell phone usage(I made that one up), fertilizers, etc. etc. etc. You could make you own list of what you suspect, but we definitely want to make sure we are not focusing on one narrow avenue to the exclusion of all the others, because then the potential exists for a false arrest and conviction while in reality the real criminal (or cause of autism) is still out there to be caught. I think this is a very complex issue and without a serious overhaul and changes towards more objective data keeping, the answers will remain elusive. I have a son who is likely on the spectrum somehwere and will be evaluated soon, but what we do know is that he is missing part of his corpus callosum and has some delays. We do not know why. It is not a genetic syndrome, (or not one discovered yet) he was not exposed to alcohol or drugs, etc and there were no significant pregnancy complications, but for me I believe and will probably always believe it was caused by removal of amalgam fillings during pregnancy. This type of dental work releases a surge of mercury into the maternal bloodstream so I believe it probably affected my son's prenatal development. But I know I am biased... it could have been the influenza vaccine I received during pregnancy, or the environmental hazards in our neighborhood, or some gene issue that has yet to be determined. We are right to push for more, much more, but we need to first push for a system that will at least allow all the information to be processed accurately and scientifically. |

No matter which side of the autism-thimerosal issue you are on I have to ask why use thimerosal at all? I looked up my company's MSDS on thimerosal and it contained such information as "Avoid all contact with the human body." "Neurotoxin which damages fetal cells." The list of side effects from thimerosal exposure went on for four (4) pages. If my company's MSDS is based on very solid research then I ask once again, why do we still use thimerosal? |

While it seems no one is willing to step up and take the heat for their huge mistake our children are suffering the consequences. I have a 3 year old son who has been diagnosed with PDD-NOS. While pregnant I did everything I was supposed, never eat fish, didn't recieve a flu shot, I did everything by the book. By the age of 2 I had seen a difference in my son. While his pediatrician told me I was just reading and watching t.v. too much and there wasn't anything wrong with him, here we are one year later with his diagnosis. In the meantime we have had a genetics test completed which shows that there is nothing genetic to have caused my son's autism. So, for all of you out there that stick my this genetic excuse and feel that us parents are just trying to find someone one to blame please explain to me why my son is autistic. I have a younger son, and am terrified to have him vaccianted, just as much as I am terrified not to. Autism is not something you can just take an antibotic for 7-10 days and it will go away. This is a life-time tragey that has hit our family. If the vaccations are the key role in causing this epidemic in our children the government should really anti-up, not for my sake, or any other parents sake, but for our children's sake. As a parent this is something I can not fix for my son, I can just try and help him with it, but this is something he has to learn, at the age of 3, he has to learn how to cope and live with autism. I would never want any money awarded to me for the error of this huge mistake, but feel that a trust should be awarded to all of these children so that they have something when their parents are no longer around to help take care of them. |

Our son is now 22. I felt like something was wrong early one. At 12 months I knew he was too easy of a baby. Never cryed. Was content all the time. Did not babble. Did not talk a single word at2 years. Had a few words at 18 months. They were gone by 2 years. As he got older his behavior changed and was fearful of many this. Was a picky eater. Developed rituals. Lining toys up. Got upset if something was out of place. He is noww 22 and going to a community college. He wants to teach special ed.,but the classes are getting tougher for him.We take baby steps. He maybe able to get a associates degree and work in the school system as a teacher assitant...He has a great outlook and teaches us so much about percerveriance. Everyone he meets loves him. I feel his autism is a result of the m.m.r. shots. He was developing fine till 18 months then I saw a change after he had his m.m.r. at 18 months. By 2 years old he was so different..Regardles he is a wonderful child.I asked him one day if tere was a cure for autism would he be interested in it. He said I like the way I am.. That is so cool.I count my blessings. Things could be worse. |

People that don't have an autistic child will never understand the frustration us parents go through. Our children were vaccinated thinking we were doing the right thing and here we were unknowingly poisoning our children. My son has reactions to DTP and the Pertusis was reduced by 1/2 for the 2nd shot and 1/4 for the 3rd and none given for the 4th. When he received his mmr vaccine he became very ill. Within an hour he started to get a high fever then he started to scream, like hearing your child cry in extreme pain. I called the pediatrician and she said "Oh Thats normal reaction for some children" I didn't believe this and called and another hospital and they told me that some children develop brain swelling as a reaction after the vaccine and if he doesn't stop screaming in 5 hours to bring him in. I was horrified, my childs brain is swelling, he has a fever of 104 and this is normal? After this I never had him vaccinated again. But the damage is done and my son has Aspergers Syndrome, a form of autism, anxiety disorder, sensory disorder, migraines and mod to severe learning disabilities. His life was taken away from him and the goverment is sweeping it under the rug, what a wonderful country we live in |

I do beleive that vaccinations play a part in Autism. My concern is that it is not just the childrens immunizations. What about any drugs given during pregnacy and delivery. I had high blood presure so I was given large amounts of magnesium during delivery, which has an effect on the nervous system. Although my doctor stated it was a normal birth. My child also has another nerve disorder called hypotonia (low muscle tone, the brain doesn't tell her muscles to tighten these messages are sent through our nervous system) So, maybe it wasn't her shots maybe it was what was given to me. |

While it is true that Vaccinations may well play a part in Autism, I disagree that it is the MAJOR cause of Autism. I, my children, my niece, and a uncle who NEVER HAD THE VACCINATION are autistic. I agree with a study that was on the internet and on some news stations last year. It showed that there is a DNA GENE that causes autism. If it's the VACCINATION that is causing Autism, why are we not seeing even MORE cases? I think that people who rush to 'get the mercury' out of their system are nuts. That is no cure. Just ask the family of a young boy who died doing 'just that'. The detoxation of Mercury from 'the system' cured that boy alright. It cured him out of his LIFE! I submit that we need to explore EVERY AVENUE for a cure to Autism, and not merely the ones that seem to be the 'flavor of the month'. sincerly, debrarae |

When my now 16 yr. old (born Feb. 1991)received the vaccine he broke out in a terrible sweat, screamed for hours and was later diagnosed at 20 months w/PDD-Nos moderate to severe. His various Dr.'s have denied the vaccine as being the possible cause as well as his nuerologist. It is an awful fate for this beautiful child who is now in a group home due to his related aggression, size and lack of coping skills. I have devoted my life to working with this population in the professional mental health field for the past 14 yrs. The link of Autism and the vaccine's effects need to stop being covered up. I have always believed his physical reaction was a major part of his diagnosis. |

I am a professional technical representative and degreed chemist that works for a hazardous waste clean-up firm. One of my recent projects happened to be at a large pharmaceutical firm that produced all of the childhood vaccines for many years. Back before 1976, it was "legal" to dispose of hazardous wastes on one's property, so there have been many clean-ups throughout the years to remedy the situation. I cleaned up thousands of tons of soil that was dug up and found to be contaminated with thimerosal. The whole time I was furious, and could not do a thing about it. I am the mother of a 7 year-old son with autism. I have known for years that mercury is the cause, it is so wrong that no one will take the blame. |

I grew up trusting that the medical community was composed of trained professionals who knew all the latest, greatest information and treatments for everything. I trusted our government agencies: the FDA and the CDC to work with university, public and private researchers to do what was healthiest first, and profitable second, for our country's people. I trusted that the media would work as a powerful checkpoint to reveal anything "gone wrong". Well, our son was finally diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome when he was 8 years old; even then, no one agency stepped forward to help guide our family to how to get the best treatments: behavioral, nutritional, or medical, for our son. Over the last two years we have taken this task (really a quest) on ourselves. The internet and many books authored by either parents or doctors with autistic children bring so much evidence and more importantly, HELP in our understanding of what we can do for our son. I only ask, "What is wrong with erring on the safe side? What is so wrong with hearing what parents are saying? Money and power can make people do terrible things." |

I too am a student and I do agree that our children are genetically predisposed to autism ( how I don't know). The point I and many other parents are making is that the thermisol poisoning may be the tipping point. And that if our children had not been exposed to this poison, perhaps their lives would have been different. The fact that the gov. and pharmacutical companies have lied to us and led us to belive the propaganda about the safety and nessesetiy of vacinations is fundamentally wrong and evil. Do you know for instance that here in Canada First Nation's Children were given "free" chicken pox vaccinations even though people of First Nation's (American Indians in the U.S.)ancestory show a genetic sensitiveity to the pox virus. They told us that good parents protect their children from diseases, and didn't we want to be "good parents".This just goes to show you that the propaganda isn't often the truth |

My son is 25 years old. When he received his first DPT shot at about 3 or 4 months of age, he had a very extreme reaction. Our pediatrican at the time, called it a "screaming reaction". He did not have seizures, but screamed at the top of his lungs for hours and hours beginning about 4 hours after getting the shot. This was in 1981 and there was no concern at that time among the general public about preservatives in the vaccines. In 2000 he was diagnosed with Angelman syndrome, giving a name to his previous PDD-NOS. Angleman is on the Autism spectrum and is a genetic condition. Still, I am convinced that his reaction to the vaccine had an effect on his development, above and beyond the Angelman syndrome which he would have been born with. At the time of the vaccination his babbling stopped as did little games like "where is mommy's nose" - which he could point to before the vaccine. Our children MUST NOT recieve these toxic ingredients in vaccines!! But it is not just vaccines, but our environment that has added so many toxins to our lives. |

My son, who is now 7, has been diagnosed with high functioning autism. The medical community would not agree to even test for heavy metals. It was a major undertaking to even have his blood tested...which showed elevated levels of mercury. Now, no medical doctor will provide any guidance on how to treat this. It is obvious to me that if you are in the line of liability (physician or drug manufacturer) you will continue to deny this connection between thimerosal laced vaccines and autism. Your unwillingness to even investigate makes me ever more suspicious of the medical community and drug manufacturers. If you are truly passionate about the health of your patients, let's try and find the truth and not put your heads in the sand! |

Comments from a student with three autistic children... ...So it my understanding is that autism is partially related to the inability of the brain to cull neural pathways at the appropriate time. (Why this happens is yet to be discovered and is not the only player in Autism.) Data from autopsy and imaging studies, as well a research from birth defects and chemical insults during early development led to these theories. Too many of the no longer needed neurons are firing off and sending your poor brain to many signals. This lack of culling happens during gestation, way too early for tThis Forum message belongs to a larger discussion thread. See the complete thread below. You can reply to this message!
