Sadly enough it has been suggested to me that regulations have been implemented in outdated building codes that require any door that leads out into a passageway be opened towards the inside of the room to keep from hitting somebody walking by when opened.
I agree with your mini maze suggestion as being the best. Maybe a letter to the local health department would get this changed. After all, it is they that put those signs up in restaurants that employees should wash their hands after using to toilet. It boggles the mind that anybody would have to be told that.
