Re: Billionaires for Bush
Apologies to those who have already hear me tell this.
I ran for congress last year. In a speech I gave to a lunch group, I brought up the fact about campaign money is nothing but bribe money. I brought up a figure from 1989, that for every dollar that is spent on a campaign, the corporations that donated the money expect at least a 4X return on their "investment", basically a tax increase to you and me.
After the lunch, one person chased me down. He told me that when he was in the military, he had just graduated from college and was a new lawyer. He was helping out a senator on a new bill. He called the Senator back to tell him that there were five items that were unconsititutional. He then asked him, "do you even read these bills?" The Senator told him: Our only job is to get re-elected, and that's what we spend our time doing. The bills are wrote by those who give money to our campaign and all we do is sign them.
The figures I used from 1989 are grossly underestimated now. I would think that for every 1 Dollar given to campaigns in 2004, the corporations will expect a 20-100 times return on their investment (tax increase) the 230 million that folks think George will raise, is easily a 20 billion dollar tax increase to me and you, with all that money going to the corporations that gave to his campaign. Art fleisher being proud of that is identical to a couple being proud of their daughter because she is the highest priced hooker in the neighborhood.
