Palo Alto Takes Stand Against Patriot Act
June 3 (AP)
The post-September 11th legislation gave the government broad rights to investigate citizens in the name of the war on terrorism. It gives the FBI greater power to monitor e-mail, library records, bookstore purchases, credit card bills and educational records.
Last night, the council voted for a resolution, which forbids city police from helping the FBI in a secret search of a home. Other restrictions include prohibiting police from stopping drivers or pedestrians simply to check their identification without any suspicion of criminal activity.
The city's library system has already begun shredding documents and deleting computer files as soon as books are returned.
More than 100 cities have passed similar resolutions.
