Re: mycobacterium, chelonae/abscessus group, in lungs

Hi,
My mom is 67, and was diagnosed with this exact same disease over 2 yrs ago. We were referred to a disease specialist, my mom also has emphysema. She was put on a Antibiotic therapy for one year, taking two meds, Biaxin and Levaquin, every day. She seemed to have beaten it, but about 6 months later, the symptoms of her infection returned. She was once again placed on the two Antibiotics , this time for one and a half years. This past March, was one year having been on the meds again, but her symptoms re-appeared even though still on medication, and she became very ill. It was surmised her body became immune to these Antibiotics . She will be coming home this weekend, after having spent 6 weeks in the hospital. This infection is very serious, seek a second opinion, or get a referral to a disease specialist. I hope I helped.
