Actually, private companies were hiring felons and minimum wagers. (who were doing about the same job as the TSA screeners for billions of dollars less). Not to say that felons aren't in the TSA, as they have been rushing through background checks just to get bodies out on the airport concourse.

BTW, the TSA pay scale is the highest in the Federal government and it has over 75,000 employees.The TSA notified Congress that the new federal agents at airports would be paid salaries of $70,000 plus overtime. Half of the TSA employees who don't screen passengers make over 100K a year and some investigators make up to $136,000. Many other Federal law enforcement agencies have been bitching because with virtually no training, no experience and no qualifications, TSA employees make much, much more than other law enforcement personal.

And, talk about a monster in the making, the TSA will be larger than the Dept. of Energy, Labor, State, HUD and Education combined. (National Review)
