The PKU tests multiple things that include thyroid, inborn errors of metabolism..like PKU and others. Most of the time the testing requires that you have 24 to 48 hours of protein intake in order to be the most accurate. Protein can be formula, breast or IV fluids that have protein added.
If the baby is ill at birth make sure that you do routine pumping of the breasts about 8-10 times a day in order to help your milk come in. Ask the nurses about a pump and breast pump kit.
