Re: What is Jihad?

Peace be unto all of you.
I am a new muslim american, but my understanding of what jihad means is "struggle" and I believe the prophet Mohammad (Pbuh) refered to a HIGHER jihad where we struggle with ourselves to defeat qualities within ourselves, or problems within ourselves, that are not pleasing to Allah swt or ourselves. The other form jihad was only acceptable if muslims had to defend themselves against attack. We also live in a different time as well as share many different cultures as muslims. But why can not Jihad be used to bring muslims together back to the true Islam? Muslims should never forget how progressive the early muslims were concerning womens rights, basic human needs, and even respect and protection of the people of the book.

Peace
