Re: Rising sun

Salam alaykom (peace be with you) brother.

I too am a muslim, and i received an email with your message regarding the sun rising from the west on mars.

As much as i would love to believe it was true, we as muslims must not be so quick to arrive at conclusions which are scientifically incorrect and unsubstanitated by modern technology. The term retrograde motion which mars is undergoing at the moment is simply an apparent westerly motion (optical illusion- so to speak).

Planet mars is still travelling in a easterly direction, however because the earth is travelling faster, it appears to the observer on earth that mars is travelling backwards against the star backround. It is this phenomenon that is called "retrograde motion". So unfortunately the sun will not rise from the west on this occasion - maybe another day - Allah knows best.

In saying that i do agree that one day the sun WILL rise from the west on earth as the prophet (may Allahs peace and blessings be upon) him said. The exact phenomenon however is unknown.

We as Muslims should not behave as people from other religious faiths do, and claim everything to be a miracle when it is not. We lose credibility in the long run, and if we were to think about it, there is no need to act in such a manner and clutch at straws. All praise be to Allah, who blessed us with the greatest book of all, the "Quran". A book which contain the words of Allah, a message to mankind unchanged in its original form, in which there are so many miracles- that we can use as a proof and a reminder of Allahs' existence and greatness.
