bright red urine

Hello
I recently went to the emergency room because urinating was extremely painful and red urine would come out. I usually get uti but this one alarmed me in particular because of all the blood. The tests results showed a uti and they prescribed cipro for me. I was given fluids and a catheter to flush out the blood. Once that cleared I was sent home. I took a catscan of the chest to see if I had kidney stones. They didn't see anything and suggested I follow up with my urologist. I never want it to happen again because seeing all that blood was so nervewrecking and the pain was unbearable. I do have a habit of holding my urine for long periods of time especially at night. I just wanted your opinion on this. thanks
