Asthma is the body’s defence against over-breathing. You are breathing in excess of your body’s needs. The carbon dioxide you are breathing out is a smooth muscle relaxant and is the body’s own natural bronchodilator. That means as your levels of carbon dioxide fall your airways become tight and constricted. While your bronchodilators bring immediate relief, there is considerable evidence that they are associated with a worsening of asthma and asthma related deaths. The worse your condition the more desperately you need the understanding to control asthma symptoms. Tell your doctor that scientific trials (I taught the Buteyko method in the first UK Clinical Trial funded by the National Asthma Campaign between October 1999 and June 2001) have proven that Buteyko is remarkably successful in controlling symptoms, which reduces the need for medication and therefore the unpleasant side effects of drugs.
