Hyper 3 yrs old- any natural remedies to help calm him down

I have a 3 yr old who is extremely hyper and drives me up the wall. He's constantly jumping, running, and screaming. I don't think it's bad enough to ask my dr for ridalin or anythign like that, as a matter of fact I would not allow my child to take that. However I was wondering if there is any natural herb that can help him calm down a little. Last night, he was just screaming and throwing stuff. Time out doesn't work , he won't sit down. Spanking doesn't work, so I sat him in my lap and held him there for 15 min. He kicked and screamed the entire time. Afterwards he was a little better after getting all that frustration out.
