Why do I have to keep the oil in the fridge?

I was wondering if anyone could answer my question: I read on this website that you must keep flax oil in the fridge and in the healthfoos store they also should be kept in there, in case they don't, you should inform the staff. I can imagine myself telling the people there about this... They probably would get really upset and they would think that I'm lecturing them and anyway, they work there, they know much-much better then me, so I should just keep my mouth shut... They don't keep the oil in the fridge, but other oils are kept on the shelf in the stores as well. In fact, I have never seen oil in the fridge.
Flax oil has a strange taste, and I was wondering that is it because it is rancid, or is just the normal taste? Where do you guys buy the oil, and do they keep it in the fridge?
