Reversing insulin-dependant diabetes

Andreas,
My father has diabetes. He injects himself with insulin twice a day. My mom died of colon cancer a year ago. (Unhealthy lifestyle, obviously).

My dad is now very open for a dramatic change.
What steps should he take to reverse his diabetes? I'm sure, it's possible.
