The way I understand it, the colon walls can be stretched to many times their normal diameter. From what I have personally seen, the compacted fecal matter is very smooth, and appears to be shaped like I imagine my colon is shaped. This material can also be a paler color than normal poop which when stuck neatly and smoothly into the crevices of the colon walls could reasonably pass for the wall itself. When thinking of the colon, I often think of a sink drain pipe. the build up takes place over time, and can be quite smooth and pipe-like in shape. Unless something has disturbed it by scraping it, you would have no idea how think it is or what it is made of. But once you scratch thru it, it becomes obvious. During a colonoscopy, all the loose material is forced out, but the stuff nestled into the crevices and coating the wall looks like one continuous thing, without interruption.
