Different people have different tolerances for retaining an enema. Even a person with good tolerance can occasionally experience cramping. I have found the following to be useful:
1. If possible, try not to run to the toilet when the urge is at its peak. Try to maintain your position and breath deeply until the cramping decreases and then visit the toilet.
2. A bedpan in a chair next to the bed may useful. Even if you don't have to use it, it can boost your confidence just knowing it is there if needed.
