Re: Magnesium Oxide - oxygenating the gut??

Magnesium oxide won't oxidize your gut, but it is a source of magnesium if you are deficient. It is not very absorbable however, more expensive magnesium supplements that are chelated with amino acids or malic acid would be more bioavailable. There's no reason not to use it with P&B shakes, but if you take too much mg in any form, you will just get diarrhea. Theres not much downside unless your kidney function is impaired. (Excess mg is released through urine)

Magnesium peroxide does release free oxygen in your gut, however, as any use of peroxide goes, it is oxidative and if you are exposing your internals to it, you are potentially damaging your own tissues. Supplements like Oxypowder contain magnesium peroxide. It seems to work better if you have a layer of gunk - the peroxide will react with that. But once you get past that, I would be very cautious. Oxidative stress on DNA is a well known mechanism for cancer.

See this message for more chemistry background.. it is basically high school chemistry.
