U boats burned?

I was watching a show on the history channel a couple of weeks ago and it was about guadalcanal in WW2 if I remember rightly, well it went on to say that hundreds of U boats were burned there by the military, seems kind of wasteful to me, wouldn't they make nice collectables? anyone know why they would do that?
