Baath Party Christians
Since Mr. Avnery mentioned that the Baath Party in Iraq was founded by Christians, I thought I'd explore that theme a little bit, since he offered no evidence himself of this fact.
First, you can read about
Iraqi Christians. This article describes how the Baath party sought to unite all Arab people based on race, rather than by religion. In particular, the Iraqi Christians sought to install the Baath party because it was more secular, and thus was more permissive of non-Islamic people.
Another article describes Hussein's rise to power. The the founder of the Baath (Ba'ath) party, Michel Aflaq, a Greek Orthodox Christian, expressly put Hussein on the fast track to dictatorship. According to the article, Hussein's calling on Islam to fight against the American invader -- in fact, any call to Islam by Hussein -- has a hollow ring to it, because Hussein's views are so secular.
You can read another article entitled,
"Christians say Saddam's Iraq a safe haven". And here's another one, from a Christian web site (
Come And See: The Christian Web site from Nazareth), subtitled,
"Iraqi Christians fear post-Saddam Islamists"!
In other words, the pro-war Christians on this web site want to oust and kill the man who has made it safe for Christians to be Christians in Iraq!
The irony just tickles me -- well, except for all the killing, that is.
Of course, those aren't real Christians over there. They're fake Christians, so it doesn't matter.
