Seemingly simple polarity question that's not so simple

I'm officially confused! I have a book by Dr. Philpott that indicates that the North, or negative side of a magnet (the side we all want facing ourselves during therapy), will attract the NORTH side of a compass. That is, if you place a compass near it's face, it will attract the N needle. Great! Seems simple enough.

So I ordered a Vitality Sleep Enhancer from Arizona Unipole Magnetics (the Dr. Philpott APPROVED site), and found it attracted the SOUTH side of my compass.

Then my gaussmeter arrived in the mail, and it indicates NORTH! The gaussmeter reads opposite of the compasses I've used (which is about 10 different kinds at this point... they all agree with each other). The gaussmeter unfortunately is not sensitive enough to show the earth's polarity.

A call to Azunimags stated that their unit could not possibly be built incorrectly.

So the question is this: Does the north pole (therapeutic negative pole) of a magnet appear the same as the Earth's north pole, or is it simply attracted to the Earth's north pole? And which side of the compass should pull towards the therapeutic side?

It doesn't help that other sites refer to their products as 'North-facing' either!
