The point of the story is that one cannot "do" in order to gain eternal life...one must "be". This individual, with all his wealth was looking for the quick answer that wealth could "buy" as was his norm yet Jesus asked of him to be under His Lordship...trusting Jesus rather than himself and his riches. Didn't happen. God doesn't ask that people be poor in material possessions to "be" His...just poor in "doing" to enter in.
