Why should I sign up to use ABC codes now?
On January 16, 2003, the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) approved use and testing of ABC codes as a proposed modification to the HIPAA standards.

What happens if I don’t sign on to use ABC codes now? HHS established a cut-off date of Sunday, March 16, 2003, for registration of all potential ABC code users. Unless registered, insurance companies, healthcare practitioners and their trading partners will be “locked out” of using ABC codes to conduct e-commerce over the next two years.
