re: depression
taking calcium-magnesium supplements might help. W/zinc if you are a male. I wld go to a healthfood store and get some good quality supplements. They need to be balanced: twice as much calcium 500 mg to magnesium 250 mg -- is the usual dosage one finds. sometimes there are calcium/magnesium/zinc balances -- usually the zinc is around 50 mg. more is not always better. take what helps you to feel better, no more. it will probably take several days to a week before you feel the effects. these minerals are such that the more you take, the more your body expects to receive. I take a lot: around 2000 mg calcium per day, but it is necessary for me -- otherwise I get very crabby and depressed. In the summertime, I can usually get away with 1000 mg calcium per day, sometimes 800mg.
calcium/magnesium are important components of your nervous system. they help to regulate the firing of the synapses (sp?)throughout your nervous system -- and you thought you only needed them for good bones ;-)
try to eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables -- stay away from too much glutenized food like biscuits, bread, and highly processed and junk foods (barbeque chips, hard candy, packaged cookies).
next thing: exercise. walk, bike, run up and down the stairs -- do yoga in the privacy of your living room -- dance to your favorite tunes, jump up and down, swim --- whatever you can. movement will go a long way in relieving depression.
and last, but not least -- find an artistic outlet -- paint, draw, music (do you play anything?) hummm, sing la la la --- sculpt, pottery can be a very fine remedy (go get some play-doh and see if you like it.
Depression can be sustained by thinking negatively, remembering sad things or things that made/make you mad or frustrated. try to meditate, find a mantra that will help you shut out the negative thoughts you are thinking. and remember -- all things pass. --
good luck. my thoughts and prayers are with you.
