My personal opinion is that since he'd already decided to commit
suicide he figured he didn't have any reason NOT to marry her. She'd been with him for a long time and it's hard to imagine she wouldn't have mentioned marriage.

Perhaps he married her to 'reward' her for faithful devotion.
It's a facinating, although tragic, story.
