Peritoneal Dialysis
I have a younger brother (39) who has diabetes. He's had diabetes since he was 12, that's not the issue. The issue is what has taken place through modern medicine over the past five years. Five years ago, he had a fall and wound up with an infection in his leg. It took the doctors nearly a month to get him well enough to return home. But the medication he was on during those twenty-seven days led from one thing to another. In the process, his blood pressure got out of control (blood pressure medication ensued), then high potassium levels (another drug), profuse sweating (another drug), low iron levels (another drug) and now today, he is faced with "Peritoneal Dialysis" and eventually kidney tranplantation. He is scheduled to undergo surgery tomorrow to have the "catheter" placed in his belly.
I would like to know if there is an alternative to kidney dialysis and tranplantation and if so, what the success rate is? Also, I would like to know if the kidneys can be restored AFTER undergoing the type of surgery mentioned above and being on dialysis since by the time this is read, he will probably already be undergoing dialysis treatment.
Any information would be well received.
Thanks
Rich
