The old man told me that circumcision was imposed upon the Jews by one of their various ancient conquerors, and that they turned around and adopted it as a mark of distinction and pride.

Other old men may have other tales about it, of course.

Anyway, it became all the rage in the United States in the late 19th Century when it was promoted as a means to curb self-gratification in males.

(It didn't work.)
