Re: Fundy...Sounds Like A Nasty Word...???

"Fundy" is just another slur used by ignorant and bigoted people who try to make themselves superior by putting down others. Whether the slur is racial, ethnic or religious, it is just a word that is intended to demean and belittle a group of people. It is a nasty word, but it is also just a word without power to hurt unless we allow it.

Years ago I wrote an article for a newsletter I edited for my district denomination called "Hello, I'm A Fundamentalist". One statement I made was that a Fundamentalist truly believed that Jesus Christ is "the Way, the Truth, and the Life" and the only path we have to our Heavenly Father. Jesus never said he was a "choice", an "alternative" or an "option", it doesn't matter what you believe as long as you are sincere. While the latter statement may be more politically correct and easier to accept, it is a lie.

I know that there are many people who call themselves Fundamentalists that would probably be better called modern day Pharisees because of their legalism and man-made rules for righteousness. I wonder if this extreme of "Christianity" is the reason true born again, Bible believing, Jesus worshiping Christians get such a bad name from so many unbelievers.

Its hard to be put down and belittled because of our faith, but it would be unrealistic not to expect it. We have to resist the temptation to retaliate with similar words and attitudes, but like Jesus taught in word and deed, we must learn to "turn the other cheek" and continue to reflect Christ in our word, actions and attitudes. Like an old preacher friend of mine likes to say-we may be the only Bible some folks ever read. Let our faith be reflected by our works and not worry about mere words. Tweet
