Re: a lesson learned
but the bible teaches that gods will is consistent, that the scriptures cant be broken. so if my understanding of one scripture is countermanded by another scripture elswhere, then it is my understanding that is incorrect and not the scriptures contradicting themselves.
i think i know where BM is going with his emphatic "no", and that would be that some scriptures are for certain people and not for others. my bible says that god is not a respecter of persons, therefor i dont see that point of view as valid either.
there are some decidedly enigmatic passages in the bible and i have chosen to reserve judgement on some of them rather than assume that i know what they are about, even though there are those who would proclaim their meaning loudly as if they are speaking from on high.
i have always found that the scriptures go against the flesh and therfore are not of a nature to tell me things that i want to do, just the things that i need to do. in the past, i have bolstered my desires to do something with certain scriptures as my justification and have found myself at odds with the lord and having done things that i should not have as a result. certainly there are those in this world who use the bible to make war or rape the planet or lord it over their wives, and these things are just not justifiable. not by anything that jesus has said, for sure.
the bible can be made to say anything one wants. it covers the gammut of the human condition. for example, paul says he beats his body daily. and in another place he says to treat your wife as your own body. does this make paul an advocate of wife beating? i wouldnt be surprised that in some twisted mind out there, it certainly does. lord help us all to understand.
