I just loved your post. If you notice, a few of us seem to be on the same page here, digging into the significance of those old cranks in Jesus' times (and our times....Ssshh)
Yes, it is so easy to get out of balance. I've also been thinking historically how often the church has been visited by extremes, from the first century on! How often it has been contaminated with some foreign leavening.
