Vitamin C and Canker Sores

Vitamin C and Canker Sores

Dear N.P.:
I'm not taking any vitamins currently but feel pretty good. I'm going to start on a multi, but I have to be careful: I find that some I've tried -- Centrum and One-a-Day -- really give me an upset stomach, even when I take them with food.
The real question I have is about vitamin C. I love to drink juice but find that when I do -- even a glass of O.J. or grapefruit juice each day -- I get canker sores in my mouth. Is there too much acid already in my system, or what?

Vitamin C usually spells the end of canker sores. However, some people are more sensitive to acid than others. Zinc and vitamin A can fix that most of the time, but when that fails, the salt form of vitamin C is helpful. This is vitamin C as ascorbATE, instead of ascorbIC ACID, and it can include sodium, calcium, potassium, magnesium or a mixture of the four. Any type is okay, though I prefer capsules.

I use pretty high doses for today's high-stress world . . . a minimum of 1000mg twice a day.

For the record, I have never had much in the way of positive results from multivitamins that only contain the recommended daily allowance (RDA).
Good Health,
A.N. Spreen, M.D.

When takine ascorbic acid, it should be mixed with baking soda, it helps absorb more of the Vit C and makes it buffered.
Only ascorbic acid crystals is real Vit C...
Example One level teaspoon of ascorbic acid and one half teaspoon of baking soda, use that as a measurement, half of the baking soda to what every amount of ascorbic you use, in an 8oz glass of water or juice.
The tablet form is no good, of a 1000mg tablet you will be lucky to absorb 200mg of ascorbic acid.
