Re: IS TWELVE-STEP MENTALITY HOLDING US BACK?
A Rational Man’s Resistance
Michael…
I couldn’t agree more that this business of mandating attendance in AA meetings is a mistake. It is in violation of our freedom of and from religion and it is unwanted by the people who sought out AA voluntarily.
Nothing would please me more than having the courts stop ordering people into attendance at meetings that they don’t want to be in.
But no matter how one cuts it, the recovery rate for alcoholism is not that good. And the cost of incarcerating an offender is many times the cost of rehab or a 28-day program. And being that the program of AA is absolutely free, it doesn’t surprise me that budget conscious bureaucrats would opt for the free path over the added expense to the taxpayer.
I also agree with you in the curious acceptance of a spiritual solution by the medical and scientific community. One would thing they would be at best skeptical, and it wouldn’t be surprising to find some in outright opposition to the AA mythology.
The world is indeed an odd place.
I am glad you have found sobriety. That is the most important thing, how one does it is secondary.
On the road to the good stuff,
