Re: supplements for weight gain?
The only thing that I've found helps to put on weight is a herb used in Chinese herbalism called Da Zao. (Pronounce it "Da - dzao") It is a very mild herb -- almost a food, really, that promotes the generation of muscles and fat. It also calms the Cerntral nervous system to keep you calm and relaxed. This is a good thing, since stress causes people to either gain or lose weight abnormally.
Da Zao is actually a type of Chinese date, that has been baked / smoked. It tastes a little weird -- like a juicy date that has been roasted in a camp fire.
You can eat between 4 - 7 da zao per day (not more than 8 or 9). Eat a couple at a time and space it over the day.
If you have a lot of mucus in your throat or nose, or if you catch a cold, then stop taking them until the mucus is gone, otherwise it will make it worse.
Eating Da Zao also helps after taking anti-biotics to get digestion back to normal. Mine is always messed up if I have to take anti-biotics... cramping, bloating, diarrhea, etc., but Da Zao fixes that up pretty well.
It isn't some kind of miracle cure. I've been trying to gain weight long enough to know that there is no such thing, but it works slowly and surely. You can expect about 6
pounds of gain in a couple of months.
A research study was done with Da Zao and a couple of amino acid supplements (sorry I can't remember which ones), on HIV+ patients. All of the patients in the study gained several pounds.
If you live in a city with a Chinatown, go there and get some. If not, you'll have to order some online somewhere. I always just go to Chinatown, so I'm not sure where you can get them online.
One small note about Chinatown herbs... Go to a couple of different stores and find one where you really trust the person. Some of them have poor herb quality at high prices. Da Zao should be quite cheap... only a few dollars. Also, good quality ones are dark brown, almost black, shriveled, but still moist. They should be refrigerated as they can easily mould.
GOOD LUCK!
