Oral sex

I know this is a dumb question. A lot of people are doing oral sex. Besides for not doing anything like that on someone who obviously has visible sores and what not, how do you protect yourself from "catching something" when doing oral on someone. Even if you're married to the person, you still don't know what they have been doing outside of the relationship.
