Re: chronic diarreha

Hi Lily,

I saw someone mentioned to take Immodium for the diarrehea...I had one doctor tell me to take Immodium for the same problem and another doctor told me to take as little of it as possible because, like a lot of chemicals that treat symtpoms, it also has toxic effects on the body. Just an FYI.
It really helps to try to find out what's causing the diarrhea, in order to find the right cure.
Here are some questions to ask if you haven't already:
Do you have colon spasms also, (feeling like you have to go to the bathroom, whether you actually do or not)? An abnormally functioning colon (associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome), in itself, can cause frequent diarrhea. If that's the case, you might notice it getting better during times of low stress and worse when you're under pressure. GI doctors have anti-spasm medicines that help some folks for that.
If it persists, you might have to have a colonoscopy to find out if there is inflamation in the intestines/colon, in which case there are a variety of homeopathic and prescription treatments.
Experimenting with foods to see if you have an alergy is also a great idea.
Just some easily accessible remedies that might help the symptoms a bit until you figure out the problem:
Chamomile, Fennel, Peppermint teas and supplements all have calming effects (peppermint supplements can help slow spasms).
Some people actually find that extra fiber can help slow diarrhea (Citrucel, in particular is often recommended). It didn't for me, but it was recommended to me by a GI specialist.
Acidopholus, which can be purchased at any pharmacy, helps to replenish "friendly flora" in the digestive tract. If you took anti-biotics recently, which kill friendly and harmful bacteria, you might want to try this.
I've also heard a lot of folks have had benefits from Aloe Vera liquids, which cleanse and sooth the digestive tract. Again, didn't work for me, but every body is different.
Best of Luck to you, hope this is of some benefit!
