Re: HELP! Stubborn mother having stroke- refuses hospital
I know this is so very hard to deal with. I have gone thru it with my parents and I also worked in a hospice program for three years. It is always agonizing to the caregivers and can tear a family apart. Please have a group meeting with your family, and maybe her doctor too, all speak freely and make a decision, then speak to your mother about her wishes.
The first thing you must do is get a heatlh care power of attorney for your mother. That way your mothers health care wishes will be carried out by whomever she chooses. It helps alleviate the guilt you feel, you are doing what ever they want....like not wanting to place a feeding tube, or be placed on a ventilator for example. (The power of attorney comes into play whenever the person is unable to make healthcare decisions for themselves).
Your lawyer can advise you of this also. You can also call your local hospital, senior center, hospice, etc for advice and the forms. I think you can download off of the internet too.
The living will only goes so far. This is much more specific to end of life decisions.
