Re: What????????????

This is just the worst advice I have seen given to someone who is anemic. I'm thinking of advice number 1) To become a vegetarian!!!!!!!!!!! As a former vegetarian I am well aware of all the nutrition lacking as a result of being a non-meat eater. No B12, limited amino acids and definitely limited iron intake.

Red meat such as beef is the best, easiest source of iron. Fry it lightly so it's bloody and red and take some ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in a little water to drink with it. Vitamin C increases absorption and its acid will digest protein. Stop all grains as they contain phytic acid which block iron absorption. Stop tea, spinach and milk products (the calcium in milk blocks iron). Also vitamin E, magnesium and zinc supplements should be put on hold as these act as iron antagonists.

Red meat and ascorbic acid is the quickest and safest way to build up iron reserves.

Also advice number 9) Eat sardines!!!!!!!!!!This should never be recommended to anyone who is sick no matter what the cause. Fish contains toxic heavy metals!!!!!

Taken from a dietitian web site:

"Phytates and oxalates can interfere with iron absorption from the gut, but the research is not conclusive on this subject. Phytates are found in bran and whole grains. Oxalates are high in nut and nut butters, beets and beet greens, tea, strawberries, gelatin, rhubarb, spinach, chocolate and wheat bran. Most of these foods are the very substance of a vegetarian diet."
