Re: Question to Kosher observing friends

Hi Motherof4,

I am not Jewish, but try to eat the clean meat diet of Leviticus 11 and Deutoronomy 14. I just recently becase aware of questionable Vitamin D3 sources in milk. Although I do not drink milk per se, there was a time when I was drinking store bought "organic" kefir with added Vit. D3. Guess I will be making my own, as the following statement from your post points out that companies do not have to divulge the source of their D3.

"Further, there is no legal requirement for the manufacturer of the vitamin D3 formulated for human food supplementation to specify the animal sources of the precursor molecules that were employed in the synthesis of the D vitamin."

We do eat a lot of cheese, and we try to buy just the organic or raw varieties, but even then I have no guarantee of the source of their rennet.

I am becaming convicted to try to find sources for kosher meat in my area. I thought I was doing well to find grass fed meats, but I guess I need to go one step further.

I am interested in the response of those who keep kosher as well.

Currently I get my Vitamin D needs met with Carlson's Cod Liver Oil. This is a pretty controversial subject. Weston Price wrote in his "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration" that other cultures get many more times the amount of Vitamin A & D from animal fat sources than do Americans without signs or symptoms of overdosing.
