According to Ou, Gao, and Li in the Journal of Agricultural Food Chemistry, 1999, 47, pages 4714-4717, in their study entitled: "An in Vitro study of Wheat Bran Binding Capaicty for Hg, Cd, and Pb", the authors conclude that phytic acid can bind large amounts of Hg, Cd, and Pb and decrease the concentration of these metal ions in the ambient solution to such an extent that they would not cuase damage to the human body under pH conditions similar to those present in the body. Phytic acid is also known as IP6, or inositol hexaphosphate. I have used this material with astonishing results in alleviating symptoms of mercury poisoning in myself. The literature seems to indicate it binds other metals, viz., cadmium, lead, as well.
