I think I'm a Gnostic with gnosis
I've been reading some books that discuss Gnosticism and early Christianity. And as usual, trying to answer the big picture questions of my life-who am I, why am I here. You know, the ones you're trying to answer, too. Looking for answers in a book called "Jesus and the Lost Goddess", I was awakened to a glimpse of what the gnostics call gnosis. To quote from the book:
"The "Gnosis" or "Knowledge" they(the Gnostics) sought was self-knowledge. Their spiritual quest was to answer the most obvious of mysteries, which continually confronts each one of us:'who am I?'"
"In relationship to the outer body, we experience the psyche/soul as our 'inner self'.For the Gnostics, it is a deeper level of our identity than the body. At the center is our essential identity, which the ancients called 'nous'. Nous is the the witness of all our experiences, whatever their quality... It is that in us which knows. It is the subject of evey experience, which each one of us calls 'I'.It is the sense of BEING in every human being. It is who we are."
The catch phrase for all this is "Know Thyself", something I've been working at for years. And all this seems to be coming together for me. Reading these passages from the book has made me aware of flashes of this 'sense of BEING'.
It's like sleep walking and then suddenly being awake. It lasts only for a moment but is quite memorable. I know my awareness of it is a door opening to a greater experience of Life.
This is a really big moment for me and I wanted to share it in a place where perhaps others would understand and share my happiness. The fact that it came out of my reading gnostic material made it appropriate to put it here. I hope this can be of value.
