Re: I think I'm developing carpal tunnel syndrom....HELP!
Scorp,
If you think you're developing it, take action now. The longer you wait, the more likely you will have lasting damage.
Realize that carpal tunnel is rarely a localized problem. It generally has to do with posture, muscle balance and includes the upper back/shoulders as well as the forearms and wrists. Often, your triceps are weak, relative to the rest of your arms, so they don't support your wrists properly.
For immediate relief, make an "ice gel" pack using water and rubbing alcohol in a large zip lock bag, then put that in another zip lock bag. Keep this in the freezer. When your wrists are aching, wrap it around the wrist(s) and tie loosly in place. Rest for 20 minutes, preferably on your back with a cervical pillow supporting your neck and a pillow under your knees. Give yourself time to recover afterward -- your hands will be awkward for a bit. Do this 2x daily while working on posture, muscle balance and the underlying causes.
The theory behind long use of ice packs: First, circulation slows, to preserve body warmth. The area goes into oxygen starvation (it hurts!!!), then a reflex kicks in to fully dialate all the blood vessels. Circulation increases, flushing the inflamed area with lots of oxygen and nourishment. Don't stop the treatment in less than 20 minutes or you miss this beneficial phase.
Good luck!
