Senator Lautenberg's letter to me
May 26, 2005
Mr. Robert Mantz
New Jersey
Dear Robert:
Thank you for writing to me to share your concern about a link between autism and mercury contained in vaccines. I am extremely concerned about those who have suffered as a result of defective vaccines. I believe that all evidence of this connection must be researched thoroughly and a vaccine should be removed if it could be a public health threat.
As you may know, provisions shielding vaccine manufacturers from liability were originally included in the bill that established the Department of Homeland Security, but these provisions were removed before that bill became law. I continue to oppose immunity in these circumstances, and I intend to vote accordingly, if necessary.
In 1986, I voted to pass the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act, which established the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP), a no-fault alternative to the traditional tort system for resolving vaccine injury claims. Congress created the VICP to ensure an adequate supply of vaccines, stabilize vaccine costs, and establish and maintain an accessible forum for individuals thought to be injured by childhood vaccines.
I am strongly committed to protecting patients' rights in the medical system, and I will continue to advocate for reforms that make it more efficient, accountable, and accessible.
Again, thanks for writing.
