Wiley's Wiley Ways - Misadventures in Breatharianism

hi people,

first off this is NOT a commentary on breatharianism as a whole, just one man in the movement. i have posted some of this info on various other posts, here is the full story. Wiley Brooks has been telling people he is a breatharian since the 1980's. He is one of the modern day popularizers of breatharianism and is the predecessor to jasmuheen. she has alternately supported wiley and admitted he has been involved in less than honarable dealings.

in the mid 90's Wiley moved to the area of Santa Cruz California, near where i lived at the time. he regularly took out multiple full page ads in the local papers with a large image of his face and words declaring "WILEY IS COMING." this would go on for two or thre months.

then he booked a dining hall in a local hotel and charged people different amounts of money to teach them the "secrets of the ancients." how much people were charged depended on the person and how many secrets they wanted to know. the prices were anywhere from $5,000 to $30,000.

in the midst of all this Wiley was caught coming out of a local 7-11 with his arms full of hostess twinkies and other assorted garbage food. he explained that he used these items to draw out the toxins in his body and only someone with extensive breatharian experience could eat those things for that purpose.

he was caught other times eating food at various places by local residents. eventually, confronted with the evidence, Wiley admitted he ate food but only to "soak up toxins." in more recent interviews Wiley fully acknowledges that he eats "double cheeseburgers from dairy queen." this of course is only to detoxify.

no one to my knowledge ever became a breatharian or even recieved any more knowledge from wiley's $10,000 seminars than you could get reading at the local new age bookstore. he left town in dishonor. he is a local legend in the Santa Cruz area, ask anyone who has lived there for long, there are many many Wiley Brooks stories, none of them good.

in 1999 i went to see jasmuheen speak at a local bookstore. during the speach i personally asked her about wiley. she said she believed he did a lot of good for the breatharain movement and that she was inspired by him. after the speach i confronted her about wiley's deeds. i said that someone who says he does not eat, charges people to teach them how not to eat, and yet in reality is eating all the time is dishonest, period. jasmuheen looked away, thought about this for a while and then said, "you know you are right."

the bottom line is people who eat hostess twinkies and double cheeseburgers ARE NOT BREATHARIANS. and if those same people charge a lot of money to teach you how to do something they aren't even doing themselves, well then they are theiving and lying.

i feel i would be remiss if i did not share this info. do what you want, but it is no longer my problem if you believe people like Wiley.

i am open to the idea of breatharianism but i really believe it is necessary to sit under the teaching of a true master for a long time before this happens, and those presenting themselves as masters may not be. how can you ever really know? it is impossible to either prove or disprove.

this is the abbreviated version of wiley's adventures. if you want to believe him and give him your hard earned money, by all means go ahead. but don't say you weren't warned.
