More on Jesse Koochin's story

Jesse Koochin is my 6 year old son. On April 19th 2004 he was diagnosed with Medulablastoma of the brain with metastasis to the brain and spine. Prior to this Jesse did not show any symptoms of cancer except for vomiting and headaches 3 weeks prior to his diagnosis. An MRI showed that he had a tumor the size of tangerine growing on his brain stem. The neurosurgeon performed the surgery on an emergency basis in order to save Jesse's life. Jesse recovered well but then needed a shunt installed as the hydrocephalus did not decrease sufficiently. Gayle, my wife and I where frantic as to what to do next. The oncologist urged us to immediately proceed with the most aggressive chemotherapy and radiation possible, including a bone marrow transplant using his own bone marrow for recovery. The protocol called for 4-28 day cycles of chemo as Jesse's tumor was metastasized throughout his brain and spine. We opted instead to do a naturopathic chemo called Ukraine with a protocol called IPT (insulin potential therapy) at a Holistic Clinic in Georgia. However, we were unable to receive that therapy as Jesse came down with pneumonia. On May 22th he ended up in the ICU of a Georgia hospital where he slipped into a coma and had to be put on a ventilator.
The oncologist there said, to save his life emergency radiation should be given. The radiation helped, as he now could breath roughly 5 breaths on his own out of a total of 15 per minute, but he was still in a coma. That particular hospital never even permitted me to give my son Vitamin C (they threatened to report me to Social Services if I did administer anything that was not their standard protocol and that meant that our son could be taken away from us if we did not abide strictly by their protocol). I showed them medical reports on vitamins and even convened a hospital ethics committee on that issue but all fell on deaf ears. We begged them to release us so that we could fly Jesse to a Mexican hospital that had an ICU unit. The administering of more radiation lowered my sons blood stats to a dangerous level and I knew in my heart that if he received any more radiation he would not make it.
At this point I called Dr. Kelly and talked to him as a friend of mine in Canada was on the Kelly program. He gave me some advice and part of that advice was to call a Dr. Rawdon who handled his disease with a healthy lifestyle program. Armed now with some hope thanks to Dr. Kelly, we pleaded to be released to Mexico. The hospital said no to our request as their policy dictated that they would only release Jesse to an American ICU unit and no where else. Jesse received a total of 3030 rads when we told them to stop. One radiologist told us that in this particular tumor that the majority of the cancerous cells are killed in the first week of treatment and the remaining 5 weeks of radiation is to kill the most resistant cells. We opted to air ambulance Jesse to a Florida Hospital near our home who then gave us the green light to go to Mexico. Their evaluation was that Jesse had very low brain activity per an EEG and didn't have pupil or body movement whatsoever. We were told that Jesse would probably not live out the week.
The air ambulance attendants flying Jesse to San Diego had us sign a release form to release them of any liability. Jesse's brain was so swollen because of the cancer that it was pushing itself down his spinal column. During the flight they said there was a chance of a brain herniation and said if that happened it was likely that Jesse's heart and breathing would stop. We still had to take the chance because in Mexico they had protocols for treating Cancer that we were in agreement with and in addition, they allowed our own protocols from Dr. Kelly and Dr. Rawdon. They basically told us to bring all the bullets that we had, to fight this disease.
As soon as we arrived in Mexico the compassionate doctors and nurses there began his treatment and his recovery began.
Within 14 days at Clinica Salud (the ICU hospital in Mexico) Jesse was moving his left toes and foot and his fingers on both hands. Within 3.5 weeks he was breathing on his own without the assistance of the ventilator and he was coming out of his coma. After one month in Mexico we flew Jesse back home to Florida in a commercial Airliner as a regular passenger. Jesse currently is now at home regaining abilities daily. Speech and physical coordination are rehabilitating and today at this date, he ate his first whole banana and drank through his mouth 300cc of fruit smoothy. For the last three months he was fed through a stomach tube. The protocols that we followed in Mexico were: (The first two are Clinica Salud Protocols but they let me do the number 3, 4 & 5 protocols in their hospital gladly.)
