"Choosing to support the negative view (political-action groups 'against' war, government, 'end of the world scenario' etc etc) can have repercussions contrary to your intentions"

"Although the pessimistic perspective is more socially adroit than optimism, which is often denigrated as naive, the turn of pessimism expressed through complaint or through putdowns is, in fact, the Chief Feature (Saturn-like 'flaw' or 'fear' each of us is born with - actually our Lesson) at work in a way that appears sophisticated and wise and "worldly". While it is unfashionable, optimism gives acces to the broadest range of action and choice, as well as supporting the postive poles of oneself. We would wish to add that pessimism, by 'anticipating the worst' and therefore in theory preparing you for all that might go wrong, in fact limits choices and by presenting the direst picture, seeks to persuade the individual that all individual action and choice is futile. Because of enculturation and acculturation and social conditioning, pessimism is one of the most insidious forms in which the Chief Feature manifests and, in the disguise of realistic appraisal, pulls the fragment to the negative poles of oneself and the realms of fear."

*I didn't dredge this information up...I just read it in the book I'm reading about a half an hour ago. Talk about good timing!
