I don't think so because the picture isn't on this server. Your just telling this server go here (somewhere on the web) and look at this picture.

I hope the Webmaster corrects me if I'm wrong, but we do this at a couple of other forums I belong to and it doesn't affect their speed or stress the system. Now if you were loading the pictures onto this server that would be a different story.
