Spotting right before a period....

Hey Shelly, I have a quick question. In the last couple of months, I've been seeing some brown spotting right before my period. I'll have spotting which will be followed a couple hours later by the regular blood flow. The spotting is not normal for me so I am wondering if it is a bad thing. I am not on hormones or birth control of any kind.
