The infection is within the pore itself and deeper within the body just about anywhere. The pus is the result of the body's attempt to fight the imbalance of microbes, which can happen for a plethora of different reasons. The white blood cells and friendly bacteria fight the baddies, these agents all die, and hense the mucous/pus, or runny nose, or phlegmy lungs, to exit the dead microbes and used up proteins etc. Sometimes it's a matter of deep-set congestion that can only escape thru the skin because the bowels and lymph are so overloaded.
