The process in which L-G is biosynthesised into NAG is very complex and involves several steps, which requires various enzymes and other complex organic compounds to be present in the conversion is to take place. So the conversion cannot be guaranteed to happen in an unhealthy gut, which may not have enough of what is needed and may have inhibiting bacteria. That's why I believe taking NAG is essential.
