I never got all scientific about it and tried to find a bacteria count... I just made some inferences based on all the things I've read about bacteria. I drink real kefir from grains fresh and warm, so it has dozens of living, healthy, fresh bacteria. The pills will be living, but not fresh and maybe not "healthy", meaning that they're old and in a dormant state. This is just my opinion really, but I think fresh active bacteria will go into your gut fired up and ready to go, they're still living organisms and like most I doubt they come out of a deep sleep or hibernation at 100%. The commercial kefir is basically yogurt from what I understand. I'd say better than pills though, especially if you can ingest it fresh and active.
