Re: What about Jesus

You've really studied this...
Why, then do you think the Romans chose Jesus as the historical figure they would attach this divinity to?

It seems strange to me, the Romans being the pillagers and rapists that they were, that they would choose to turn a villain of the state into a god and savior of the people.

Also, why choose a jew? Why not make him catholic from the start.

Now, granted, maybe these are juvenile questions, I have studied world religions - passively, not in depth - but I am not a history buff.

It just seems, the way the Catholics were... content to torture, maim, and kill their way to power, that using a passive / agressive approach like turning Jesus into a hero is not their style.

My thought is that the Bible began as a book of Jesus' teachings - not a religion really, but something along the lines of The Book of Tao - He had some wisdom and knowledge to impart so he did and his friends wrote it down.

I also believe though, that the original intent of that book was to make man responsible to himself for the state of his soul, to teach him paths to enlightenment and happiness, - or that our deeds and what kind of people we are is much more important than belonging to a church... and the RIGHT church at that.
I think the Catholics, in an attempt to enforce their religion as a form of government on a whole bunch of frightened, uneducated people - they changed the bible to say what they wanted it to say, to make man responsible to the church for his salvation, and even went so far as to stick HELL in there to scare the crap out of them too.

I have no basis in fact for any of those thoughts, just some things I've read, but I really felt them to be true when I read them.
That is why I wanted you guys' feedback - I respect your opinions and education and I wanted to know what you might have to say in reference to that?
